lf and lead by two touchdowns at the break, 22-7.

But the Rebels (1-2, 1-1) didn’t give up, bouncing back in front of the home crowd at Don Greene Stadium. Behind a strong passing game, Coosa Valley closed the gap to just two points, 22-20.

The Rebels looked poised for the comeback after stopping the Chargers inside their own territory.

All the Rebels needed to do was recover the punt, and then drive down the field to win.

After being down at the half, Coosa Valley Academy came back in the second to claim its first region win 33-28 against Lyman Ward Military Academy.

“We played pretty miserable in the first half,” said CVA head coach Steven Mackin. “We played much better the second half, we executed in the second.”

At halftime, the Rebels went in to the locker room down 28-19, but in the second half Coosa Valley held Lyman Ward to no points.

Posted by cvaalumni on October 6, 2007

From The Shelby County Reporter:

HARPERSVILLE – After a tough-fought 20-13 win over Coosa Valley Academy, Cornerstone head coach Tim Smith said he wanted to give all of the glory and credit to God.

Coosa Valley head coach Steven Mackin said that he was proud of the way his team played and said he had a feeling Friday’s game would be a close one.

“It was just a knock-down, drag-out fight of a game,” Mackin said. “Cornerstone played really well and we just came up a little short.”

Cornerstone Christian School proved defending state champion Shelby Academy is no longer a step above the rest of the AISA Class 1A teams in Shelby County with an 18-7 win over the Raiders last Friday.

It was the first-ever win over Shelby Academy for Cornerstone, which will now try to knock off its second inter-county rival this week as the Chargers take on Coosa Valley Academy in Harpersville.

Rebels Drop Third Straight

Posted by cvaalumni on September 24, 2007

From the Shelby County Reporter:

HARPERSVILLE – Coosa Valley Academy played Springwood close for a half, but the Wildcat running game proved too much for the Rebels and they lost, 22-6.

Springwood led 6-0 at the half, but gradually wore down Coosa Valley in the third and fourth quarter on their way to 326 rushing yards.

“We played them good,” Coosa Valley wide receiver/linebacker J.B. Ripley said. “We just got tired and they started blowing us off the line.”

Ripley came up with several big tackles to stop Springwood on third and long situations, but by the fourth quarter, Springwood was able to get first downs on several fourth and shorts and the Rebels had trouble at the line of scrimmage.

Update: Brandon Nix (‘04) Starts for MTSU

Posted by cvaalumni on September 19, 2007

Excerpts from MTSU Q&A with Brandon Nix:

You are very versatile along the offensive line, seeing time at both guard spots and working at center. Talk about your versatility and what you attribute to being able to play multiple positions.

The hardest thing about switching from a guard to a center is getting the snaps right. The plays you can pretty much mirror yourself from what everyone else is doing. The hardest thing to do is working on the snaps. I feel that fall practice will help me get into a rhythm with Joe (Craddock).

The team lost three valuable starters in the offensive line from last season. What are your expectations from the new starters this season?
We have a bunch of guys coming back that had game experience last year. We’ve been out here since last fall and spring and now fall camp. Once everyone gets used to what we’re doing, we’ll be ready to go. As position wise for our starters, we have big guys coming back that know what to do.

A lot of those playing on the offensive line have had extensive playing experience the past couple of seasons. How does this help them transition into an everyday starting role?
Most of the guys have started at one point. The only one who didn’t was Jamal (Lewis) and he was studying the playbook all last season. He just needs that playing experience, which won’t take him long to get this year.

Also from the Tennessean.com:

Three more starting offensive linemen were injured in the Blue Raiders’ 27-14 season-opening loss at Florida Atlantic on Saturday.

Starters David Price (guard) and Brandon Nix (center) broke a hand, and guard Richard Bortner reaggravated a neck injury. Price will undergo surgery and be sidelined for at least two weeks. Nix broke his snapping hand, so he will move from center to right guard on Thursday. Bortner could also miss about two weeks.

CVA Falls to Shelby

Posted by cvaalumni on September 19, 2007

From the Shelby County Reporter:

MONTEVALLO – It looked like Shelby Academy’s recent string of victories over Coosa was in jeopardy, but the Raiders managed to grind it out in the second half for the 32-20 win at home.

Shelby (2-1) improved their overall record against the Rebels (1-2) to 24-11-1, but the Raiders have won the last eight meetings in the oldest rivalry for both schools.

CVA – Shelby Football Preview

Posted by cvaalumni on September 13, 2007

From the Daily Home:

The Coosa Valley Academy Rebels are itching to get back out on the field.

CVA (1-1, 1-0) hasn’t played a real game for nearly two weeks, with last week’s scheduled game against Marengo called off when officials didn’t show.

After a Week 2 loss to Chambers in which the Rebels were defeated on a heartbreaking touchdown, CVA was prepared to storm the gates.

“Friday night, they were ready to play ball,” second-year head coach Steven Mackin said. “We came back the week after Chambers and had a good week of practice. The kids, they were focused all week long. They were wanting to really avenge what happened.”

Instead, they’ll have to do it this week when they travel to Montevallo to take on rival Shelby County. The Raiders (1-1) are the defending Class A state champs, and a win for Coosa Valley could pay dividends down the road.
