From the Shelby County Reporter:
Oakes was fired last week in a move that is both damaging and embarassing to CVA baseball.
It is damaging because the headmaster and board of directors have allowed school politics to come into the way of what is best for the student-athlete and baseball program. How does anyone, while looking out for the best interest of the school, remove a coach who has helped put their school on the map. Not every coach can take a program to back-to-back state championship games, winning the latter in a dominating sweep.

From the Shelby County Reporter:
HARPERSVILLE – After two seasons as head baseball coach of the Coosa Valley Academy Rebels, two state championship appearances and one state title, Kevin Oakes is out at CVA.
Oakes received word of the move Monday from a close friend not affiliated with the school. He did not hear from CVA headmaster Pam Lovelady until Tuesday.
“I’m shocked,” Oakes said. “I think it would be unprecedented that a coach would come in, turn a program around, while giving all of the credit to the kids, and then turn around the next year and he’s gone.”
Lovelady said the school’s Board of Directors met Sept. 20 and decided to make the move.
“The board has decided and are attempting to fill all coaching positions with full-time staff,” Lovelady said. “Kevin is a wonderful coach, and the board appreciates everything he has done.”

From the Daily Home:
Oakes, a graduate of Coosa Valley, served as head baseball coach for the past two years and during that time led the Rebels to the state championship game in AISA Class A and AA. Coosa Valley finished as runner-ups in class AA in 2006 and won the 1A championship in 2007.
“I’m disappointed, heartbroken,” Oakes said Wednesday. “That was a dream job for me to come back to my hometown, my alma mater to coach baseball. I feel very fortunate to be able to do that – for the short time I was able to do that.
“When we came back and I took the job I did it for long term — I didn’t do it for just two years.”
The Rebels posted a record of 26-11 in 2007 and defeated rival Shelby Academy for the championship.
